Major Internet Failure Affects Numerous Websites and Applications
A large-scale web failure has impacted numerous online platforms and applications around the world, and users noting issues connecting to the web due to difficulties at Amazon’s web hosting service.
The affected apps include the social media app Snapchat, the gaming platform Roblox, Signal, and the language learning app Duolingo, as well as several Amazon-owned platforms like its key e-commerce site and the Ring security device manufacturer.
In the UK, the financial institution Lloyds was affected as well as its affiliates Halifax and the Scottish bank, while there were also reports of issues accessing the HM Revenue and Customs website on Monday morning. Also in the UK, several Ring users turned to networks to state their security devices were not working.
Just within Britain, notifications of issues on individual platforms totaled the tens of thousands for every service.
Officials confirmed that the problem started in the eastern region of the United States at the cloud division, a unit that offers crucial web framework for many businesses, who utilize space on Amazon servers. The cloud platform is the biggest global cloud computing service.
Just after late night (PDT) in the US (8am BST), officials reported “elevated failure rates and latencies” for Amazon's platforms in a zone on the eastern US of the America. The widespread consequence was seen to hit apps around the world, and the outage tracking website indicating issues with the identical platforms in various regions.
The outage tracker Thousand Eyes, a service that monitors web disruptions, also reported a rise in problems on that morning, with many of them located in the Virginia area, the region of the AWS US-East-1 zone where officials confirmed the issues began.
